Halloween Mad Libs are a fun way to tie in language arts skills on the day before your class party. Print these three stories from the PDF or share the Google Sheets with your class. Students can type nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in the table and then watch with amazement as the formula autopopulates their words into the blanks of the stories. This resource is great for upper elementary teachers who want to engage students in a simple, creative writing activity before Halloween.

✅ ELA Centers – Include Mad Libs as a fun station where students practice parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs). ✅ Before Thanksgiving Break – Use Mad Libs as a festive, low-stress activity to celebrate the holiday while reinforcing grammar skills. ✅ Early Finishers – Give students Mad Libs to work on when they finish other assignments early. ✅ Writing Warm-Up – Start a writing lesson by having students complete a Mad Lib to get their creativity flowing. ✅ Partner or Group Activity – Students can work in pairs or small groups to fill in the blanks and then read their silly stories aloud. ✅ Homework or Take-Home Fun – Send Mad Libs home for students to enjoy with family members. ✅ Creative Writing Practice – Encourage students to create their own Mad Libs stories after completing a template. ✅ Classroom Display – Collect finished Mad Libs and display them on a bulletin board for a fun Halloween-themed showcase.

Halloween Mad Libs are versatile and can be used in so many fun ways in the classroom. They make an excellent substitute teacher activity, since students can complete them independently while staying engaged. They also work perfectly for a grammar review, giving students a chance to see and discuss parts of speech in context.

For oral language practice, students can read their finished Mad Libs aloud, building fluency and expression while entertaining their classmates. And of course, they’re ideal for a Holiday Fun Friday, adding a festive, lighthearted activity to celebrate the Halloween season.
